This a legendary film to remember Westerns by
I admire Clint Eastwood as a director and as an actor, his storyline always deals with social issues and has great points to prove, I'm not much a fan of 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly' or 'American Sniper' but I totally loved his 'Letters from Iwo Jima' and 'Gran Torino'. About acting, he's totally perfect no question in that, he's so badass and looks so cool even in his 80's as seen in Gran Torino. He's 86 now and still directing, 'Hats Off' Sir!
Unforgiven was the last movie of proper 'Western' genre as in 90's audience for it was declining fast as everybody was shifting to Superheroes genre, big directors of Western like Sergio Leone have already passed away; so Eastwood makes it as an adieu to the genre, thus naming it 'Unforgiven' to carve it's legacy in the tombstone of Cinema.
As a result, the theme of Unforgiven is set in the back-drop of times where the Wild West is soon to be extinct - the notorious gunslingers are endangered - either baptized by religion or reformed by their families and have become mostly farmers leaving behind their bounty hunting jobs and outlaw-life. In this movie, we see even writers-journalists are desperately searching stories of highly-feared former gunslingers to make articles and stories for pulp magazines.
Clint Eastwood, is that retired gunslinger who used to be one of the dangerous outlaw in his youth but now in his old age is offered a bounty by a young man blind as a bat and due to his economic conditions he does accept it but unfortunately he isn't who he used to be, he's so weak and vulnerable now but is bold, brave and total badass. Though, back in bounty business he's got a good purpose to serve now.
Gene Hackman was amazing as a wicked authoritarian sheriff so sadistic. There was also Morgan Freeman, his character was essential for the plot but I don't think he left much influence to the audience, not his fault the plot itself was at times just moving and moving. I believe the screenplay could be improved. Although, Climax was excellent and worth the wait.
