"Nature made me a freak. Man made me a weapon. And God made it last too long."
I'm not a fan of superhero genre. The reasons I watched this a) I was born in 1995 and Wolverine was my favourite childhood superhero, I've seen all movies of wolverine till 'X-Men: Days of the Future Past' (and that was amazing, there are exceptions) and this is last one by Hugh Jackman (Oh, I can't imagine anyone else in this role.) b) It's directed by James Mangold, I've seen his '3:10 to Yuma' and it's an amazing Western c) It is hyped too much in terms of ratings and I heard that it's dark, gritty and not only a full action film but of consisting emotional drama. Enough, let's watch it!
Hugh Jackman plays the best Wolverine ever; he so hurt, broken and weak, the emotions are so visible right on the face; it's 2029 and almost all the mutants are extinct due to 'Alkali-Transigen' a corporation hunting mutants and eliminating their biological genes of which 'Donald Pierce' played by Boyd Holbrook is a part (he was quite good as a villian). Dafne Keen is so cute, wild and ruthless and she's only 11-yrs old, she was a total badass. Prof. Charles Xavier (Patrick Steward) is having seizures and has lost much of control in his powers.
It's a Neo-Western and the action scenes were so gripping and mind-blowing, the choreography was excellent. I think it's structure was rather similar to 'Unforgiven' as that was the last Western movie and had the theme of declining Wild West - the characters were old and vulnerable, in Logan as well is Hugh's last and here the characters are weak as well; Although, in both films we see how they've to still be so damn fierce dispite all the odds. I saw Unforgiven the previous day I saw Logan (pure coincidence, I didn't know)
I like this film because it was not just a thriller but had much touching drama. Prof. Xavier tries to bind Logan with a family to show him what it is actually to be in a family, and one can't be wild all the times and has to rationalize oneself; he also teaches Laura (Dafne) what one's duty is in life and how one has to move forward in life leaving the past behind them.
This film never felt CGI-ed much and every time the violence explodes, it felt earned. The action is so grusome, violent and is kept limited that we feel so satisfied.
Here's a video to explain the Wolverine timeline:
