Relationships

The Relationship of Jerry and Beth

by Yash Sinojia

Talking of Rick and Morty, it’s an amazing show. I think that the nerdiest show about the nerds and also an epitome of chaos and adventure. The 22 mins are too much for a bourgeoisie to handle. There are various aspects of the show that can be analysed about but I think there’s much about Jerry and Beth that reflects our society and there’s much things we can learn from their relationship.

Jerry and Beth have a typical married life like most of the couples: unsatisfied with each other, complaining and trying to adjust with each other - especially for the sake of Morty and Summers. So basically they’re misfits and different from each other: I think Beth is more responsible as a parent as well as a bread-winner, she’s always had the dream of becoming a heart surgeon and have put quite an effort on it. On the other side Jerry is too clumsy and doesn’t have a stable job, is unemployed most of the times and whenever he tries to get a job, we know some shit happens like that ‘Hungry for the apples?’ stuff. Although, Jerry cares about Morty and Summers much, he doesn’t want them to end up like him and he’s so insecure about his scientific knowledge. But the thing both have in common is a value, a value for adventure: we see almost all the episodes have this parallels between these storylines one of Rick and Morty and the other of Jerry and Beth which at the end makes them appreciate their lives and value the companionship even more. Though, Jerry mostly hates Rick for all his scientific adventures in other dimensions but he takes on charge in the worst case scenarios and Beth is always up for it. Now, let’s trace the origin of their relationship: Jerry got Beth pregnant on a prom night and they weren’t that close but the teamed up for the sake of family and got adapted with each other, Beth even have to give up her dream of becoming a human heart surgeon and instead she has to work on horses. In ‘Rixty Minutes’ we saw an alternate reality where Jerry was a famous screenwriter and Beth a human heart surgeon but they weren’t together: Jerry became an addict and was into some scandalous shit and at the end of the day, he regretted everything and went to Beth that she was only true thing that had happened to her and he loved her. That’s the cost of giving up everything for a dream or that one person you truly desire.

So Jerry and Beth have this ‘Old School’ relationship not the typical that couples have in this age: considering all the fights and arguments that they have had, they never divorce each other only for their children, they get habituated. Now-a-days, we can see people dating via tinder and using every kind of filters to shortlist people, as a result people end up with their own narcissist self in other person: like a living reflection of the same person. How can people live with that? I mean one will be frustrated and depressed from the job and all the chaos and at the end of the day, how can they look up to their own reflection from which they’re highly disturbed in their life-partners? Relationship is all about learning, influencing each other and accordingly changing the aspects of each other. It’s like a boy is blue and the girl is red and together they make each other some shade of pink! I think that’s why arranged marriages in India works so fluidly as in most cases the couples don’t each other much in making the decision to marry each other and they just do it based on the consent of elders and the veneer of attributes that they come to know of each other.
